Established as a retirement community
some 30 years ago, is a community bustling with vigor. Approximately
20,000 full- and part-time residents participate in more than
200 clubs that enjoy activities ranging from bird-watching to
mountain hiking.
The community's ten social centers
are hubs of recreational activity and intellectual stimulation.
Green Valley volunteers tutor in local schools, clean roadways
and assist the Pima County Sheriff's Department. It's clear that
many of these "retirees" keep busier schedules than
their still-employed counterparts. At a size eight miles long
and two miles wide, Green Valley has gone to great pains to make
itself accessible to residents. Shuttle buses, golf carts, bicycles
and wheelchairs bound about the community's streets, which feature
specially designated "traffic" lanes.
While Green Valley is unincorporated,
that doesn't limit residents' civic participation. The Green Valley
Community Coordinating Council, comprised of members from 42 homeowners'
associations and 11 institutions, determine their own destiny.
The unique Green Valley phone directory lists residents by profession
and state of origin, revealing that the majority are successful
professionals from across America.
